While there are many promotions offering free trial periods for medical billing software, there is another use of the word “free” which more accurately is open source software. Finding free medical billing software is possible.

Open source software are programs with licenses granting users the freedom to run the programs for any reason as well as to study and modify the program and then redistribute copies of either the original or modified program (without having to pay royalties to previous developers).

What can you find in free medical billing software?

FreeMed is a free medical billing software which may be used in any health care setting. This software provides an electronic medical record and billing system which gives the physician full access but prohibits non-authorized users. FreeMed is a Linux-based system and language requirements.  Italian, French, Spanish, German, Turkish, Korean.

OpenEMR is another open source software for medical billing which provides for a comprehensive package of practice management including everything from patient scheduling to the ability to enter CPT and ICD codes right down to ANSI X12 support which allows electronic billing. Unlike some commercial software packages, OpenEMR is even HIPPA compliant. OpenEMR can be installed on Windows, Linux, UNIX or Mac OSX.

A more limited package is FreeB. This software is capable of creating HCFA 1500 forms and can also create HIPAA compliant X12 837p edi files. However FreeB is not able to perform other functions related to running a health practice.

Cottage Med is another open source program. This software for free medical billing is designed by physicians for physicians. The software performs a long list of functions including: scheduling, collection of statistics for epidemiology and health studies, links to Microsoft Word, charts and allows for freehand drawings, creates customized medication lists, allows for private billing, agency billing, deferred billing and includes wireless networking and PalmOS/PocketPC support.

What are the advantages of open source software? Many believe that open source software is a better choice since actual consumers and users can change the open source software to meet their own terms. Also if a commercial provider of a software package goes out of business, then anyone holding the software is out of luck since the software will eventually become outdated. But with open source software, the software continues to evolve as it is in the hands of the users who can make updates.
