Medical Billing Certification

While there is no requirement to hold medical billing certification, many individuals find it is a valuable aid in demonstrating their ability, knowledge and professionalism to potential employers.

Associations offering Medical Billing Certification

Two groups offering certification in medical billing are the American Medical Billing Association and the Electronic Billing Medical Network

The American Medical Billing Association offers the opportunity to become a Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS). In order to take the exam, your only educational requirement is that you have a high school degree or equivalent. It is, of course, highly advised that you have a strong foundation in medical billing but there is no requirement that you have any specific training or education. To take the exam for certification, you'll need to become a member of The American Medical Billing Association and have access to an internet account, email address as well as ICD9, CPT4 and HCPCS Code Books. The cost of taking the exam is $325. Once you have obtained the initial certification, there is a requirement that you have 15 hours of continuing education annually to maintain certification.

Another certification is offered by the Electronic Medical Billing Network. An all inclusive prices of $655.00 plus shipping will purchase the needed study books, software, homework modules, exams, and certificates. The Certified Electronic Medical Biller (CEMB) materials are designed to instruct students in the following: how to set up a home medical billing business, how to create and transmit electronic claims and paper claims, and how to grow your business.

Beyond the benefit of having a credentialing of your knowledge, national certification medical billing programs offer access to ongoing training and the availability of technical assistance through either the certification staff members or the network of members.

Medical billing certification is valuable and can be costly, so shop carefully and decide which programs are best suited not only in terms of your credential needs but also in terms of long-term career goals.
