Second, a medical training program will require you to undergo learning about topics such as CPT Coding Guidelines, ICD-9-CM Diagnostic Coding, HCPCS Level 2 coding, E/M Coding, Anesthesia Coding, Surgical Coding, and Use of Modifiers. In addition, Medical Terminology, UB - 92 Claim Forms, Human Anatomy, and Medicare Guidelines are included. Most courses will include software and coding manual practice as well as learning about issues of fraud, abuse and confidentiality.

To become a medical coder, there is no mandatory level of training or certification requirement however you'll find this is a competitive field so holding a degree from an accredited program will be one of your best assets when looking for employment. An associate's degree from a two year program will also allow you to sit for a certification exam with the American Health Information Association.
